Tips to Prepare

Make the most of Parent-Teacher Meets...

Purpose

The purpose of Parent Teacher Meetings is for the teachers to meet with you (parents) on a regular basis to discuss how you can help your child do his/her very best in school. The teacher is there to make your child's school experience a positive and memorable one.

Teachers prepare for all such meetings. You should do as well. Here are some tips on how you can get the most out of your Parent-Teacher Meets.

After the conference share with your child, only what is helpful - the positive aspects. It is important that your child understands that you and the teacher are there to support him/her.

Talk to your Child

Talk to your child. Let your child know that you will be meeting the teachers. Ask your child what they should be talking about. This will give you some insights.

Ask Questions

Prepare a list of questions to ask, regarding your child's progress. Some good questions to ask may include:

What are my child's strongest and weakest subjects in academics?
What are my child's strongest and weakest attributes?
Is my child working to his/her ability? If not, what can we do to change it?
How well does my child gets along with classmates?
How do you evaluate my child?
How can you support if your student is falling?
How do you encourage your students?
What is your homework policy?

Share Information

No one knows better than you about your child. Teachers need this knowledge about your child in order to help them in shaping their character and supporting their studies. Bring work of accomplishment of your child, particularly if your child is new to school, which will help the teachers know more about your child's abilities. The more you share about your child's strengths and weaknesses the better the teacher will successfully be able to meet his/her needs.

Raise Concerns

It is important to raise any concerns that you have in your mind and work with the teacher to find a solution for that. Plan ahead of time and be ready to hear the other side of the story as well. Remember that both you and the teachers are working for the BEST your child can get and approach the issues OBJECTIVELY.

Take Notes

Take notes during the meeting, so you do not miss out anything during the discussion. After the meeting, review the notes. Schedule a follow-up meeting if you find something that is not very clear

Make the Most of Your Time

Meetings are usually scheduled for half-an-hour. Make the most of it.
